Thanksgiving Kitchen Drain Care: Avoid a Brown Friday Clog

Sylvia Bernal, Done Right Drains And Plumbing 2026-10-30 4 min read

The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers, and the industry calls it Brown Friday. Here is how to keep turkey grease and holiday cooking from clogging your kitchen drains.

Why plumbers call it Brown Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers, and the industry has a name for it: Brown Friday. Service calls jump by roughly half compared with a normal day, and most of them are kitchen drains stopped up by turkey grease, gravy, and food scraps from the big meal.

The math behind it is simple. The U.S. EPA estimates that fats, oils, and grease cause nearly half of reported sewer blockages and overflows nationwide. When thousands of San Diego County households cook a holiday meal at once, kitchen drains pay the price the morning after. The good news is that a few habits keep your drains clear, and our $40 in-home drain special is there if you need a hand.

Grease is the real culprit

Grease looks like a liquid when it is hot, but it cools and hardens inside the pipe like candle wax, and it catches everything that follows it. By the time the turkey is carved, a holiday's worth of fat can coat the inside of a kitchen line and slow it to a trickle.

  • Scrape every pan and plate into the trash before washing, and wipe greasy pans with a paper towel first
  • Never pour turkey drippings, oil, or gravy down the sink; let cooled grease set in a jar or can and throw it away
  • Run hot water while the sink drains after each wash to keep the line moving

Treat the disposal like a helper, not a trash can

The garbage disposal is not designed to handle everything a holiday kitchen produces. Turkey bones, potato peels, celery, and stringy foods can jam or wrap around the blades, and whatever the disposal does not grind up still heads down the drain.

  • Feed the disposal small amounts at a time with plenty of running water
  • Keep bones, pits, peels, and fibrous foods out of it entirely
  • Let the water run a few extra seconds after the disposal sounds empty so everything clears the pipe

The rest of the house works overtime too

While the kitchen gets the attention, guest bathrooms work harder than usual over the holiday: more showers, more flushes, more hair. If a tub or toilet starts to slow down mid-visit, catch it early before it becomes a full backup at the worst possible moment.

  • Clear hair from drain stoppers after each guest shower
  • Flush only what belongs in the toilet, and keep wipes out of the line
  • If several fixtures back up at once, the issue is likely deeper, in the sewer line, and worth a camera inspection

If a clog does happen, the $40 special has you covered

Even careful kitchens clog sometimes, and that is exactly what we are here for. For in-home drains with proper clean-out access, our special is a flat $40 per drain, with a complimentary camera inspection of the drain we clear. Call 619-600-3776 or request a quote online, and the family that does the work will clear the line, show you what was in it, and get your kitchen back to normal. Same family, same standard: done right, so the holidays keep moving.
